Walk & Talk Therapy for Men in Richmond, VA
Therapy built for men — outdoors, not in an office. Sunlight, movement, the river, and real conversation.
Men have solved problems side by side for thousands of years
Hunting parties, scouting trips, long walks between camps — talking about the same things guys wrestle with today: fear, responsibility, relationships, purpose, the weight of being needed by everyone around them.
Walk-and-talk therapy brings that back. No office. No stiff chairs. No pressure to sit still and stare at someone across a desk. Just therapy in a format that feels natural. For a lot of men, this is the only kind of therapy that has ever worked.
Men think better when they move
Movement lowers tension. Fresh air helps you settle. Walking side by side takes the pressure off — it’s easier to talk honestly when you’re not sitting across from someone under fluorescent lights. This format works especially well for men who:
- Feel restless or think more clearly when moving
- Carry stress in their body and have a hard time settling down
- Never liked the idea of sitting in a quiet room talking about feelings
- Are busy professionals who need therapy to fit their life
- Tried therapy before and it felt awkward, clinical, or ineffective
ACT fits naturally here. Noticing your inner experience while moving makes it easier to see thoughts as thoughts — not commands you must obey. It’s therapy that doesn’t feel like therapy, which is exactly why most guys respond to it.
What it looks like
We meet at Robious Landing Park (Parke) or Pony Pasture Rapids (Daniel and Devin) and walk at whatever pace feels comfortable. This isn’t exercise — it’s therapy. We talk through what’s weighing on you, figure out what needs to change, and you leave with practical moves to test that week. Nothing theoretical.
- We walk in most weather; if it’s pouring or icy we switch to phone or online
- Phone sessions work well when you want to walk your own neighborhood
- Virtual sessions are available when you’re traveling or need flexibility
- This is still structured therapy — just delivered the way men naturally operate

Field notes & questions
What are the benefits of walk-and-talk therapy?
Movement, fresh air, and side-by-side conversation make the work feel more natural than sitting across from someone in an office or staring at a screen. The goal isn’t to make therapy feel like exercise — it’s a setting where you can talk honestly, think clearly, and stay engaged.
What if it’s hot, cold, or raining?
We walk in most normal weather, including light rain and typical Richmond heat. If conditions are unsafe or genuinely unpleasant, we shift that session to telehealth or phone. You never lose the session because of weather.
Is the trail private enough to talk openly?
Yes — though it’s still a public trail, so we’re thoughtful about route, pace, and volume. The trails usually give us plenty of space to talk openly. If privacy is ever a concern on a given day, we adjust the route or shift to telehealth.
What if I’m not in great shape?
The walks are not workouts. We move at whatever pace is comfortable, and the route can be shortened. If walking isn’t a good fit on a given day, we use telehealth or phone instead.
What should I bring?
Walking shoes, weather-appropriate clothes, and water if you want it. The first session covers what any first therapy session would — what brings you in and where we might start. The only difference is we’re doing it outside.
