Anxiety Therapy for Men in Richmond, VA

Stop letting anxiety run the show. You can’t outthink it, outwork it, or outmuscle it — but you can change your relationship with it.

What anxiety actually looks like

If you’re like most guys we see, anxiety doesn’t hit all at once. It builds quietly — in the late-night overthinking, the restless mornings, the jaw that never unclenches. You’ve told yourself to calm down or push through. Maybe you’ve read the books, tried the breathing apps, doubled down on working harder. But anxiety doesn’t respond to force. The more you fight it, the more it fights back.

  • You lie in bed replaying conversations from days ago
  • You feel on edge, waiting for something to go wrong
  • Small decisions start to feel massive
  • You catch yourself pretending you’re fine when you’re not
  • Your body feels constantly tight: jaw, shoulders, chest
  • You’re exhausted from holding it together

This isn’t weakness. It’s a mind and nervous system stuck in a loop — and there is a way to step out of it.

How therapy for anxiety helps

The goal isn’t to eliminate anxiety completely — that’s not realistic. The goal is to change your relationship with it, so it no longer calls the shots. You’ll learn how to:

  • Recognize anxious thoughts for what they are: thoughts, not commands
  • Step out of the internal debate and come back to what matters
  • Ground your body so your mind can settle
  • Make decisions without second-guessing everything
  • Be present with the people you care about

This is not sit-on-the-couch-and-analyze-your-past therapy. It’s practical work rooted in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy: accept what’s outside your control, act where you can, and live by values instead of fear. You’ll get tools that hold up in the real world — in a meeting, driving home, or lying awake at 2 a.m.

What changes over time

You wake up without dread sitting on your chest. You stop spiraling after every minor mistake. You breathe easier. You start showing up like the man you want to be. Anxiety becomes background noise instead of the whole soundtrack.

“I’ve lived through some terrible things in my life, some of which actually happened.”

Field notes & questions

How do I know if it’s anxiety or just stress?

Stress usually has a clear source — when the deadline passes or the conflict ends, your system settles. Anxiety keeps firing even when there’s no obvious threat: racing thoughts, a tight chest, restlessness, overthinking, avoidance, a body that won’t come down. If your mind keeps acting like something is wrong when life looks fine on paper, anxiety may be part of the picture.

What therapy approach do you use for anxiety?

Our primary approach is Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), which helps you relate differently to anxious thoughts and worst-case thinking so they don’t run your decisions. We also draw on CBT, mindfulness, exposure work, and nervous-system regulation when they fit. The goal is to stop organizing your life around anxiety.

How long does anxiety therapy take?

There’s no standard number of sessions. It depends on how long anxiety has been around, what you’re avoiding, and how consistently you practice between sessions. Progress usually looks like less avoidance, quicker recovery after anxious spirals, and more willingness to do the things anxiety used to control.

I’ve tried apps, breathing exercises, and books. Why would therapy be different?

Apps and books give you tools, but they don’t show you how your anxiety works. Therapy connects the dots between your thoughts, body, avoidance patterns, relationships, and history — and helps you apply the right tools to your actual life, especially under pressure.

Do I need a diagnosis to come in?

No. You don’t need a label or a crisis to start. If anxiety is interfering with your work, relationships, sleep, or peace of mind, that’s reason enough to talk.
