Anger Management for Men in Richmond, VA
Anger is not your problem. Aggression is. We’ll examine what fuels the fire, what keeps it burning, and what helps it die down.
Anger is a fire
It’s a conditioned pattern, fueled by the old ways you learned to see yourself, other people, and the world. Then the stories start — the arguments in your head, the justifications for why you’re right and they’re wrong — and all of it dumps gasoline on the fire. When it grows large enough it spills into aggression, and that’s when the damage starts: to relationships, to yourself, to the things you care about.
Many men who struggle with anger aren’t bad people. They’re men who have carried their defenses too high for too long. After a lifetime of being attacked — physically, emotionally, or verbally — the system develops a hair trigger. You’re not broken. Your system is in the habit of protecting you at a level that no longer matches your life.
How anger shows up in men
- Snapping at people you care about
- Feeling on edge all the time
- Overreacting to smaller things
- Feeling attacked, even when no one is attacking you
- Regretting what you said or did once the fire cools
- Shame afterward that makes you feel even more alone
How anger therapy helps
Our work together focuses on three big skills:
Catch the warning signs earlier
Quick breathing. A clenched fist. Tight shoulders. Tunnel vision. Anger shows up in the body first — when you catch it early, the fire never gets that big.
Notice the stories instead of believing them
The “I’m right, they’re wrong” stories. The “they’re disrespecting me” stories. When you see them as stories instead of commands, the fire loses its fuel.
Ride the wave without exploding
Anger is an itch; aggression is scratching it. Therapy helps you sit with the itch long enough for it to die down on its own — stopping the damage while still honoring what you feel.
These are ACT skills tailored specifically for men. Practical. Action-oriented. Nothing fluffy. Sessions run as walk-and-talk at Robious Landing, phone sessions while you walk your own neighborhood, or a limited number of online sessions.

Field notes & questions
I’m not violent — I just snap. Do I really need anger therapy?
You don’t have to be violent for anger to be a problem. A sharp tone, sarcasm, contempt, shutting down, or blowing up and regretting it later all damage relationships. The better question isn’t “Am I an angry person?” It’s “Is anger costing me something?”
Is this court-ordered anger management?
No. We don’t run court-mandated programs or sign off on legal requirements. This is private therapy for men who want to change how anger shows up in their lives — more personal than a class.
What approach do you use?
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, grounding and body-based tools, and practical communication work. The goal isn’t to suppress anger — it’s to catch it earlier, understand what’s underneath it, and choose a response that fits the man you want to be.
How long does anger therapy take?
No standard timeline. Early progress comes from learning your warning signs — body tension, tone, pacing, mental stories. Lasting change takes repetition in real life: you’re building a new response pattern, not just understanding the old one.
Will working on my anger turn me into a doormat?
No. This isn’t about becoming passive or watered down. Healthy anger can tell you something matters. The work is expressing yourself clearly without aggression or contempt — most men feel more grounded after this work, not less powerful.
